4th Jesus Signs Workshop Immersion – July 7–11 at Immanuel Lutheran Church,
St. Charles, MO
The 4th Jesus Signs Workshop Immersion, held July 7–11 at Immanuel Lutheran
Church in St. Charles, Missouri, was a great success! Approximately 50 Deaf and
hearing individuals attended. The workshop was Deaf-friendly, with communication in
American Sign Language (ASL) and visual learning tools. Deaf participants were able to
clearly understand God’s Word in their heart language.
Jesus wants all people to know Him—including the Deaf! This workshop wasn’t just
about learning facts. Deaf participants experienced Jesus’s love, His miracles, and His
teachings in a deep and personal way.
The greatest news: Two Deaf men were baptized!
Baptism connects us to Jesus’s death and resurrection. Romans 6:4 says,
"By being baptized, we were buried with Christ into his death. Christ has been raised
from the dead by the Father’s glory. And like Christ we also can live a new life."
These two men had never attended church before and didn’t know who Jesus was.
They came to the workshop and were deeply moved by the love and fellowship shared
among Deaf and hearing believers throughout the amazing week.
The workshop also equipped Deaf participants to reach out to other Deaf individuals
who do not yet know Jesus. Did you know only about 2% of Deaf people know Jesus
and understand that He died for their sins? That’s heartbreaking.
Deaf ministry is one of the most difficult mission fields. Many Deaf people are isolated
and face serious communication barriers. To make matters harder, there is a decline in
church workers—both Deaf and hearing—in Deaf ministry. That’s why this workshop
and training are so vital.
Jesus gave us the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18–20:
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. So you must go and make
disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be
sure that I am always with you, to the very end.”
The workshop also included three levels of ASL training for those wanting to learn ASL
or improve their church interpreting skills.
Deaf people can do all things—except hear. They can serve as pastors, deaconesses,
deacons, disciple-makers, elders, teachers, and leaders in the church!
